Limited
construction is now underway on Gulfstream Natural Gas System's
110-mile mainline extension, lengthening the pipeline's reach from
Central Florida to the state's east coast and doubling its service
area. The expansion is scheduled to be complete this winter.
It was May 2002 when Gulfstream first placed its 581-mile transmission
pipeline into service, providing Florida with its first new natural
gas transportation source in more than 40 years.
Since that time, Gulfstream has been working with potential
customers to extend the pipeline to the state's East Coast.
With the exception of a short distance in Martin County, all of
this construction has already been approved by the Federal
Energy Regulatory Commission and the Florida
Department of Environmental Protection. Approximately 40%, or
43 miles of the 110-mile extension, is colocated within existing
corridors.

While mainline pipeline construction doesn't get underway until
July 2004, Gulfstream has begun limited construction utilizing a
construction technique known as a horizontal directional drill (HDD).
HDDs allow the construction crew to place relatively short sections
of the pipeline in certain areas without disturbing the surface.
Gulfstream has 10 HDDs planned this summer in Polk, Highlands, Okeechobee
and Martin counties. Click here to view the tentative HDD
schedule.
The entire 110-mile pipeline extension is scheduled to be placed
into service this winter. If you have any questions about construction,
