Manatee
Riverwalk
Wednesday, June 26 marked the debut of the Manatee Riverwalk. The
towns of Bradenton and Palmetto are working together on a two-year
project that will include the designation of walking/jogging trails,
historical walks and bike trails.
Mayor Wayne Poston, City of Bradenton, and Mayor Larry Bustle,
City of Palmetto, braved a 'cherry picker' and hung the first banners
over the Green Bridge Fishing Pier.
"This two-year joint project will provide something for everyone.
I invite you to take advantage of the many planned activities and
special events…on the Manatee Riverwalk", said Mayor Poston.
"The Manatee Riverwalk project is a good example of the cooperative
efforts that Mayor Poston and I have been discussing. It allows
us to combine our efforts to use the river that joins us to the
advantage of our citizens", added Mayor Bustle.
Kelly Hodges, member of the Manatee County Economic Development
Council and Manatee Riverwalk board member, was instrumental in
applying for the Gulfstream Environmental and Recreational Trust
(GERT) program grant. "We were especially pleased when Gulfstream
Natural Gas stepped up to the plate and donated $12,000. Their contribution
made it possible to order the banners and begin the process",
she said.
Brian O'Higgins, project director of on-shore construction for
Gulfstream, cited the Manatee Riverwalk donation as just another
example of the "good working relationship" that has developed
between Manatee County, the Port of Manatee and Gulfstream. He added,
"This is a great example of the types of projects the GERT
program was designed to assist."
Pat Crocker, community relations manager for Gulfstream, said "It
makes all of us at Gulfstream proud to know we helped play a part
in bringing the Manatee Riverwalk from concept to reality. The cities
of Bradenton and Palmetto are truly creating a showplace along the
river for everyone to enjoy."
