United
Way Day of Caring
On Wednesday, May 8, nineteen employees
of Gulfstream Natural Gas System joined employees from 57 other
companies, and went out to make a difference for United Way agencies
in 87 locations across Polk and Hardee counties by participating
in the United Way Day of Caring. This is a day set aside for volunteer
efforts aimed at providing United Way agencies with the manpower
they need to tackle some of their tougher projects.
The Gulfstream group tackled a house
full of projects for the Sunrise Community in Wauchula - and had
so many energetic volunteers on hand that they loaned themselves
to a second project for Sunrise as well.
The chores the group tackled
chores including exterior painting, power-washing, weeding,
mowing, and landscaping (planting and mulching). They also
washed and detailed the Sunshine Community vans.
"The group really went above
and beyond what we asked them to do," said Charlene Vocelle,
director of development for Sunrise Community. "This is
very beneficial to the agency and wonderful for the
community."
Melissa Hammer, on-site
coordinator for the Gulfstream volunteers said, "It was a
great day. I was impressed by the Sunrise facility and its
homeliness - it is a beautiful house." She added, "It
was a great team effort." Because of the heat, we were
taking turns on some of the tougher jobs, and people that I've
"never seen break a sweat" really gave it their all.
Sunrise Community provides people
with disabilities the assistance and support necessary to enable
them to lead full and productive lives. The group serves Polk,
Highlands and Hardee counties with nine group homes and nine
supported living homes.
Robbie Davis of Florida Southern
College, and a board member of Sunrise Community, said, "We
really appreciate all they are doing." He added that they
were "working so hard we can't get them to stop for
lunch!"
Mark LeMaire, director of
volunteer resources for the United Way of Central Florida,
added, "Gulfstream Natural Gas System's investment into the
community is a wonderful example of what can happen as people
volunteer their time, energy and talents."
