Day of Caring
September 11 marked the one-year anniversary of the terrorist strikes
in America. And while media attention was focused on memorial services
across the country, some Alabama-based Gulfstream Natural Gas System
employees, teamed with area Williams employees, managed to turn
an unhappy occasion into a different sort of commemoration.
In response to President Bush's call for a national day of volunteerism
to honor the anniversary, the Mobile, Alabama, Day of Caring was
scheduled for September 11. This United Way tradition sets aside
a special day to partner non-profit agencies with community volunteers
who perform work that cannot otherwise be completed by the United
Way member agencies.
Gulfstream and Williams employees in Alabama responded to the call
and headed out to make a difference at Alba Elementary School. The
group put together a greenhouse for the science department at the
school. As a result of this effort, the children will be able to
plant many different types of seeds and to watch them grow and develop,
to deepen their understanding of nature and the environment.
The response from the students and teachers at Alba Junior High
School was tremendous. "The faculty and children made each
of us feel very proud of what we had accomplished for them. Knowing
that we will have had some type of influence on the children's education
made all of our efforts worth it," said Nicole Seaman, district
administrator for Gulfstream.
"We ate lunch in the cafeteria with the children and that
gave a few of them a chance to ask us more questions," Nicole
added. "And, at the end of the day, we were presented with
thank-you cards that the children colored for us. They also presented
us with Day of Caring t-shirts and ribbons."
The following Gulfstream and Williams employees participated in
this special Day of Caring:
Chuck Dotson
Nicole Seaman
Brian Collier
Stevie Rogers
Vincent Driscoll
Perry Schexnayder
Gregory Parr
"I'm very proud of all the employees who participated in
the Day of Caring. And I want to recognize the efforts of Nicole
Seaman in organizing the team's efforts," said Camilo Amezquita,
district manager for Gulfstream operations in Alabama. "The
anniversary of the September 11 events is a very difficult time
for everyone," he added. "By turning this into a Day of
Caring, we're showing the world what the America spirit is truly
like."
