Natural Gas System Secures Land For Compressor Station In Coden,
Alabama
HOUSTON - The Coastal Corporation
today announced that its Gulfstream Natural Gas System, L.L.C.,
affiliate has acquired an option to purchase 160 acres of land
from a subsidiary of ExxonMobil in Coden, Ala., for the site of
a 120,000-horsepower compressor station.
Gulfstream is a 744-mile pipeline
project that will have the capacity to deliver 1.1 billion cubic
feet of natural gas per day from Coden across the Gulf of Mexico
to Florida. Gulfstream has 10 large, non-affiliated Florida
utilities and power-generation facilities signed to long-term
commitments for the majority of its capacity. The project is
pending approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
Florida officials project that
the state will need an additional 25 percent electric-generation
capacity by 2007. Gulfstream is designed to serve utilities and
power-generation customers that plan on using high-efficiency,
natural gas turbines to meet the incremental demand for electric
energy.
Commenting on the compressor
station site in Coden, Jeffrey A. Connelly, senior vice
president - natural gas of The Coastal Corporation, said:
"It’s an ideal location for Gulfstream compression from
both a design and gas supply standpoint. Upstream from this
point, shippers on the Gulfstream system will have considerable
flexibility in obtaining reliable natural gas supplies from the
Mobile Bay area as well as the Gulf Coast region and the entire
interstate grid."
Gulfstream’s compressor station
will be a state-of-the-art facility, with three operating power
units and one standby unit. The facility is expected to employ
at least seven full-time workers.
