Gulfstream
Natural Gas System Receives Preliminary Determination
From Federal Energy Regulatory Commission
HOUSTON -- The Coastal
Corporation today announced that its Gulfstream Natural Gas
System, L.L.C., affiliate has received a preliminary
determination from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)
on its application to build a new natural gas pipeline from
Alabama across the Gulf of Mexico to Florida.
The preliminary determination
covers all non-environmental aspects of Gulfstream’s
application, such as rates and other business issues. A draft
environmental impact statement is expected to be issued by FERC
staff this summer. A final FERC decision is expected by early
2001.
Commenting on the preliminary
determination from the FERC, Jeffrey A. Connelly, senior vice
president, natural gas, of The Coastal Corporation, said,
"We’re pleased to have a timely review from the FERC and
look forward to continued expeditious action, which would allow
Gulfstream to begin delivering natural gas to our Florida
customers."
Gulfstream’s proposed 744-mile
pipeline will have the capacity to deliver 1.1 billion cubic
feet of natural gas per day to Florida. Gulfstream is designed
to serve Florida utilities and power-generation facilities that
plan on using high-efficiency, natural gas turbines to meet the
incremental demand for electric energy. Florida officials
project that the state will need an additional 25 percent of
electric-generation capacity by 2007. Gulfstream has 10 large,
non-affiliated Florida utilities and power-generation facilities
signed to long-term commitments for the majority of its
capacity.
