Gulfstream
Natural Gas System Requests Quotations for Installation of
Offshore Pipeline
HOUSTON, May 26, 2000 -- The
Coastal Corporation today announced that its Gulfstream Natural
Gas System, L.L.C., affiliate has sent a request for quotation (RFQ)
to 10 pre-qualified contractors for installation of the offshore
portion of its proposed 744-mile natural gas pipeline from
Alabama across the Gulf of Mexico to Florida.
The RFQ calls for offshore
assembly and installation of more than 400 miles of 36-inch
diameter pipe to transport dry processed natural gas to serve
Gulfstream’s customers in Florida. Gulfstream has 10 large,
non-affiliated Florida utilities and power-generation facilities
signed to long-term commitments for the majority of its
capacity.
"We bring 25 years of proven
experience in offshore pipeline construction and operation to
the Gulfstream project," said Jeffrey A. Connelly, senior
vice president, natural gas, of The Coastal Corporation.
"Our Florida customers can count on Gulfstream to select a
contractor that meets the highest standards for safety, quality
and reliability."
Gulfstream is scheduled to
receive bids from contractors by the end of this month. Final
environmental and routing approvals by the Federal Energy
Regulatory Commission are anticipated by March 2001.
The $1.6 billion Gulfstream
project will have the capacity to deliver 1.1 billion cubic feet
of natural gas per day to Florida. Gulfstream is designed to
serve Florida utilities and power-generation facilities that
plan on using high-efficiency, natural gas turbines to meet the
incremental demand for electric energy. Florida officials
project that the state will need an additional 25 percent of
electric-generation capacity by 2007.
