SCUBA Scout Patrol

Gulfstream has partnered with Boys and Girl Scouts to sponsor new program designed to change the way youngsters think about scouting.

It is known as the SCUBA Scout Patrol and it was formed in May 2001 as a unique, valuable educational opportunity for the Girl and Boy Scouts in the Palm Harbor area. The Patrol is comprised of 12 Girl and Boy Scouts, ages 14-17, from Boy Scout Troop 4 and Girl Scout Troup 166.

The scouts are assisting Dr. Walter Jaap of the Florida Marine Research Institute in conducting underwater surveying/monitoring of shallow-water reef habitat modules deployed by Gulfstream Natural Gas System, as part of its pipeline mitigation plan.

In order to monitor the reef modules, the scouts learned the proper scientific methods for surveying and data collection, analysis and management. In addition, each member received SCUBA certification and learned underwater photography.

The scouts' endeavors require repeated underwater surveying of the local habitat, living organisms and other marine and biological parameters to determine their relative changes over time in their new environment. Through this experience, the scout troop leaders hope the scouts will develop beneficial skills that will not only assist them in choosing careers, but also positively reinforce their respect and awe of the marine ecosystem.

Gulfstream Natural Gas System, as part of its community and educational outreach initiatives, is a primary sponsor of the Patrol and has completely outfitted all the scouts with their scuba suits, equipment, gear and other necessary paraphernalia.
